There are 5 main types of items in Subway Surfers. Coins and keys unlock upgrades, while power ups, boosters and hoverboards help you survive longer.

Coins and keys

Coins and keys are the two in-game currencies that you collect as you play the game.

• Coins: This is the main currency that you can use to buy characters, hoverboards, power ups and boosters in the game. They line the tracks and pull you into tight lanes and late dodges. Going for more coins often means taking one extra dodge that ends the run.
• Keys: These are rarer than coins. Get them by unlocking awards or by opening Mystery Boxes. The blue keys are used to upgrade your hoverboards' special powers or to unlock new skins for your characters.

Power ups

There are 4 main power ups in Subway Surfers. Power ups give you short bursts of control when the run starts getting harder.

These can be upgraded in the shop to help you survive longer runs.

• Spray Can Jetpack: Launches you above the chaos so you can ignore obstacles completely for a few seconds.
• Super Sneakers: Gain a temporary jump boost that lets you clear obstacles easier and reach hidden areas.
• Coin Magnet: Automatically collect all coins around you as you run through the level
• 2x Score Multiplier: Doubles your current score multiplier temporarily so you can get a higher score easier.

Boosters

There are 3 boosters that you can purchase or win from Mystery Boxes. These are single-use items that help you survive mistakes and beat your high score.

• Hoverboards: Hoverboards save you from one crash and keep the run alive.
• Score Booster: This blue star adds +5 to your current score multiplier.
• Headstart: Fly past the start of the level, allowing you to skip a portion of the run.

Hoverboards

Hoverboards give you one extra crash. When a bad landing would normally end the run, the hoverboard breaks instead and lets you keep going.

Apart from the starting hoverboard, there are 15 hoverboards in Subway Surfers to unlock, each with its own special powers.

Here is what hoverboard special powers do:

• Double Jump: Jump a second time when you're in the air.
• Stay Low: Roll under low obstacles automatically.
• Super Jump: Boosts your normal jump so you can jump higher.
• Smooth Drift: Fall slower after you jump.
• Speed Up: Increases your speed slightly by 12.5%.
• Zap Sideways: Change lanes instantly to avoid obstacles.

Below you will see the hoverboards available, their powers and prices. Many of the hoverboards will have the special powers locked. To unlock them, you will need to buy them with keys.

Mystery Boxes

Collecting Mystery Boxes gives you one of 8 possible prizes. With useful boosts and rare jackpots, one good Mystery Box pull can turn a bad run into your best one.

These can be found during runs, can be bought from the shop or are given as rewards for completing the Word Hunt missions.

The prizes are:

• Special: Headstarts, up to 10 Hoverboards or up to 2500 coins
• Rare: Keys, Score Boosters, Trophies or 5000 coins
• Jackpot: 100,000 coins!

Subway Surfers missions and awards

Every mission and award pushes you to make risky moves and survive a little longer so you can unlock better upgrades and items.

• Word Hunt: Here you can see how far along the daily Word Hunt challenge you are. Every day, you must collect the letters S U R F E R while playing the game to unlock daily prizes. By completing this 5 days in a row you will get a Super Mystery Box.
• Missions: Missions push you into risky moves, rewarding you with permanent score multipliers. Chasing missions like rolling 30 times or getting 2000 coins from Mystery Boxes push you to keep playing and going further.
• Spraycan Awards: There are 12 awards, each with four tiers that reward you with keys. Bronze gives 3 keys, silver gives 5 keys, gold gives 8 keys and diamond gives 10 keys.
